In a landmark gesture reflecting growing diplomatic warmth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III — the highest civilian award of the Republic of Cyprus — during his official visit to the Mediterranean nation on Monday. The prestigious honour was presented by Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in a special ceremony held in Nicosia.

Honour for 1.4 Billion Indians
Accepting the award with humility, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the honour to the people of India, describing it as a recognition of India’s civilisational values and its commitment to global harmony. “This is not just an award for me personally, but a tribute to the 1.4 billion citizens of India. It symbolizes our belief in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family,” he said.
He further emphasized that the award reflected the strong and evolving partnership between India and Cyprus — rooted in democratic values, mutual respect, and shared visions for peace, development, and sovereignty.
Significance of the Grand Cross
The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III is named after Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus and a revered national leader. Instituted in 1981 by then President Spyros Kyprianou, this order is among the most esteemed recognitions conferred by the Cypriot state. Reserved for globally distinguished personalities, the award is granted under Article 47b of the Constitution of Cyprus and honours those who have played a pivotal role in strengthening bilateral ties or promoting peace and cooperation on the international stage.

Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Links
Prime Minister Modi’s visit marks an important milestone in Indo-Cypriot relations. The two countries are now actively exploring enhanced collaboration across sectors including trade and investment, digital technology, education, renewable energy, and cultural exchanges.
Over the decades, Cyprus has emerged as a strategic partner for India within the European Union. As both nations face evolving global challenges, leaders from both sides reiterated their commitment to working together on pressing global issues such as climate change, international law, and regional stability.

This high-level recognition not only adds symbolic value to India’s global diplomatic profile but also reflects Cyprus’ appreciation of India’s growing role on the world stage as a voice for the Global South and a proponent of peaceful coexistence.
